As the holiday season continues, Longwood Gardens unveils a magical spectacle that transports visitors to a bygone era with its Vintage Holiday Lights Display. This season, the renowned botanical garden has transformed its lush landscapes into a captivating journey through time, blending the charm of yesteryear with the festive spirit of today.
Longwood Gardens, known for its stunning horticultural displays, has taken a unique approach to holiday lighting by embracing the timeless beauty of vintage decorations. The Vintage Holiday Lights Display showcases a breathtaking array of classic lights, ornaments, and festive decor that harken back to the traditions of the past.
Visitors are greeted by the nostalgic glow of twinkling fairy lights and the warm hues of old-fashioned bulbs adorning the gardens’ iconic trees. The carefully curated selection of decorations includes illuminated wreaths, charming figurines, and traditional ornaments that evoke the spirit of holidays celebrated decades ago.
One of the highlights of this year’s display is the recreation of a retro holiday village, complete with miniature cottages adorned with classic lights and surrounded by a blanket of snow. Families and visitors of all ages can stroll through this enchanting village, marveling at the craftsmanship of the intricate displays and feeling a sense of wonder reminiscent of holidays past.
“We come every year, and Longwood always comes through with something new and fabulous that we haven’t expected,” says Matty Dalrymple of Chester County. She and Wade Walton are loyal visitors to the gardens. “We’ve been members for a long time, and I was just so excited that they decided to restore a 1969 International Stake Body,” Walton says. “They did it on-site here, and they have all the facilities to do what they do, and they just seem to keep a good variety of the familiar plus new things to keep you excited.”
The festive atmosphere is further enhanced by the melodic sounds of live holiday music performances, with some resonating through the 10,010 pipes of the Longwood Organ. The largest Aeolian organ ever constructed, it adds an extra layer of magic to the overall experience.
Longwood Gardens has also incorporated seasonal scents, infusing the air with the comforting aroma of cinnamon and pine, creating a multisensory journey through the vintage wonderland.
To make the lights display even more memorable, Longwood Gardens has introduced themed nights and special events throughout the holiday season. From classic carol sing-alongs to hot cocoa nights under the stars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
The Vintage Holiday Lights Display at Longwood Gardens is not only a celebration of the past but also a reminder of the enduring magic that the holiday season brings. With its meticulous attention to detail and commitment to creating a festive atmosphere, Longwood Gardens continues to be a must-visit destination for those seeking a timeless and enchanting holiday experience.
For those looking to bask in the glow of vintage holiday cheer, Longwood Gardens’ Vintage Holiday Lights Display is open to the public through Jan. 7. For more information and to purchase timed tickets, longwoodgardens.org.
